The epitome of laziness… ?

Ok so firstly it took me way to long to make the little image that appears in this post.  I haven’t had photoshop installed for a long time now and haven’t used it for probably around 3 years.  Combine that with the fact that last time i used it I was still using the mouse in my right hand, it was a bit of a learning/memory curve!

Anyhow – the point is that I think my office is in a crap location.  That’s a fairly broad statement considering it offers some great features due to the location:

  • very close to a very nice park
  • very close to town
  • very close to many great food places for lunch
  • very close to Salamanca, one of Hobart’s highlights

So the problem isn’t really that its in a crap location, its that I’m apparently very lazy in some respects!  The map here illustrates my point:

The dark blue line represents the walk to take if you want to go into town or to any of the aforementioned food places.  As you can see, you have to go all the way around the building and then all the way around the block to get into town.  The red line would be so much more efficient but there’s a fence and a 3 metre drop. Ok – so this probably takes about 30 seconds of walking, if that, and yet every time I walk it, mainly on the return journey, I’m annoyed about the circular route!

I tend to take short lunch breaks (if any) and feel guilty if I spend too much time away from my desk.  I’m not a workaholic but I like to leave work as soon as possible in the evening and to feel comfortable doing that I need to work as much as I can in the time I’m at the office.  As a result, when I go out for lunch I tend to walk fast and the epic journey around the block is annoying!

The office is also annoying to get to if you’re driving.  I used to be on call for the alarm and would often have to go out at night to check the place if the alarm had gone off.  At 3am in the morning I was often in a hurry to get it over with, as usually it was a false alarm.  Due to Hobart’s lovely one-way street design you have to go past the office an extra block before turning around and coming back up to the office (see the green lines on the map).  This is even worse on the odd occasion where I drive to work instead of riding.  The extra block, in what Hobart calls “peak hour” can easily add 5-10 minutes to your commute, which is significant when your total commute is normally 5 minuts on the bike.

Overall I think both these things annoy me because I want to be at work and working during the working hours.  There are far more important and worthwhile things to worry about day to day, and I certainly don’t obsess about the extra walking/driving time however it is a reasonably regular cause for annoyance for me.  I’m not yet 100% sure why that is…. Whilst I do like keeping the right hours and getting my work done I’m not so inflexible that 5 – 10 minutes either way really bother me in the long run.
